Vegetable fields

20130516-215207.jpgEach year we  lay more than 14 miles of plastic mulch in our  vegetable fields. The plastic mulch helps to heat the soil, reduce weeds, conserve water, and keeps the vegetables cleaner.

Sweet onions

Each year we plant more than 20,000 Pennsylvania simple sweet onions. These onions are well known for their sweet flavor.

Sweet corn

Corn is in tassel and the ears are filling out nicely. It won’t be long before the freshest and sweetest corn will be in our market.

High tunnel

The tomatoes and cucumbers in our high tunnel (high greenhouse) look great! It won’t be long now. The high tunnel allows us to plant much earlier and later than planting outside.

Work, work, work

We plant sweet corn every week, and with several different varieties that mature at different rates we can assure freshly picked corn every day.

My office

This is a view from my office. You can also see one of our soil conservation practices. Instead of turning over all of the soil, I only work the area that the corn will be planted. This saves time, fuel, and keeps the soil from washing away.
